A man and a wolf
Long time ago, there was a man named Dichee. He was a strong man and he could eat a lot. He could eat up a wild pig at one meal. One day when Dichee was very hungry, he went to ask a wolf to go and hunt a wild pig together. They made an agreement that when they got a wild pig, they each took half. So they went into the forest and hid to get ready to catch a wild pig. After a long time, a wild pig came, the wolf rushed up to bite the pig’s neck, and Dichee ran up to cut two legs of the pig, and the wild pig died.
The wild pig was very big. Dichee couldn’t carry it by himself, but he didn’t want to share the pork with the wolf, so he was trying to find a way to deal with the wolf. He thought and thought, and came up to an idea. He cut a thorn tree to make a shoulder pole. He took the thorns off on his side but left the thorns on the wolf’s side. When the wolf was carrying the shoulder pole, he couldn’t stop screaming because it was very painful. When Dichee heard, he was very happy, and said to the wolf: “Don’t scream, otherwise the wild pig might turn into a big hemp yam.” However, the wolf was very painful, so he cried loudly all the way. When they got home, Dichee asked the wolf to go get some fire. The wolf asked: “Where’s the fire?” He answered: “On the top of that mountain, can’t you see the smoke coming up from there?” When the wolf saw it, he ran towards the mountain. When he got to the top of the mountain, he didn’t see fire. Then he looked at the other mountain, he saw smoke coming up from there, so he ran to the other mountain, and he didn’t see fire when he got there, however, when he looked at another mountain, he saw smoke again. He didn’t know it was fog, so he ran between the mountains. When he got very tired, he couldn’t run any longer, he returned home.
Dichee ate the wild pig while the wolf was gone looking for fire. He ate the whole pig, and ate it up, then he cooked a big hemp yam in the pot. When the wolf returned home, he told Dichee that he didn’t find fire. Dichee said to the wolf: “It doesn’t matter, doesn’t matter. It was hard work on you. After you left, I also went to look for fire and I found it, and then I made fire to cook the pig, and it’s ready, so you can eat first.”
The wolf was very hungry and saw chunks of white things, and thought they were fat meat. He stretched his hands to the hemp yam and grabbed some out and started eating. Because he was hungry, so he thought it was very delicious. But after he ate some, he felt numb in his mouth and started screaming again. Dichee thought it was very funny, then told him: “What happened to you? You screamed when you were carrying it, and now you scream when you are eating it. See, now the pork is turned into a big hemp yam.” The wolf knew that Dichee was playing a trick on him. He knew that he couldn’t win against the man, so he returned to his own place. From then on, the man and the wolf never interacted with each other, and they went their own directions.
